Trying to connect 5th generation ipod to itunes

I just bought a new Dell laptop. I downloaded itunes, but it does not recognize my 5th generation ipod nano. I uninstalled all itunes programs and reinstalled, restared my computer...and nothing. Still does not recognize my ipod. Please help.
