Q: How to convert .doc to .cwk?

Not as far as I know.

Apple declared AppleWorks as end of life in 2007 So I see very little chance for a way to do that conversion.

Save the files as plain text or RTF which any version of ClarisWorks or AppleWorks can open. Saving as Word 5 might work.

Have your friend tried to open the .doc in AW? If MacLink plus is installed it might be possible.
