How do I hook up a Macbook Pro to a HP Compaq LA2306x monitor?

Your monitor has a Display port.
You need connect a cable from there to your MacBook Pro's Thunderbolt port (which doubles as a "mini display port")
The cable would be called Display Port to Mini Display Port cable.
In my NEC PA271W the cable came with the monitor - check if yours has it in the box. If not, go to Amazon: cables are cheap there. But I think you'll find it in your monitor's box.
