since the last RAW converter update all my RAW pictures are displayed like wrong colored 4bit-images!
It's wether if I use Preview, Aperture or any other application that makes use of Apple RAW converter.
This is the way it looks like (left). The big image (right) is the original from the Nikon ViewNX2 to show, that tha RAW-file is right itself.

Delete or restore from Time Machine

Reinstall 4.07. Finished.
You should test this for yourself with directly importing without using Nikon Transfer. Yes, I think the file from NikonTransfer is changed from that expected in this Camera RAW, somehow!

And I'm able to import some NEFs with Aperture directly - I haven't formatted my Backup-SD-Card yet ;-)
Ok - After a direct Import in Aperture 3 the RAW-Files are correct.
I had to force Aperture to don't use Nikon ViewNX2 because my test import showed me that the header of the imported file had the Nikon ViewNX2 signature again. 😐
Are you saying that NX2 wrote back to the memory card in an earlier connection?

No. I used NX2 to TRANSFER from the memory card and I know that NX2 is manipulating some meta data in the copy for me (for example copyright entries) AND it is writing itself into the header (as "Nikon Transfer 2.3 or View NX 2.3 - wether you used Nikon Transfer utility oder Aperture itself with Nikon View NX in background to import the image from memory card).
I only said, that I used a non-touched copy of the original NEF-File for the clean import in Aperture, because I wanted to go an independent way.
Yes, of course, and I thought that was what you would do. Just got worried you were saying something different from that.
I don't know what changes may be made, but I believe that some camera settings may be taken into account by NX2, and thus the result may not match what would directly downloaded as the NEF.

It seems like any recent changes in the Nikon software would be an unlikely source for this behavior, since if so, they do not impact the older version of Camera RAW?

From what I read in other forums the importing thru Nikonsoftware to A3 causes the problem. But that is only a guess.
That's only a piece of the truth ;-)
It is not only limited to importing NEF files through Nikon ViewNX to A3.
Only importing with the OLD Nikon Software (prior 2.8) causes this red pictures and it is not limited to A3 only - ALL Applications show those red pictures (Preview, Pixelmator etc.)
With the last Nikon ViewNX2 Version 2.8 (dated to Aug.,20.) this behaviour not happens!
Yes its not limited to A3 because the RAW converter is part of the OS, not an application. Good to know that ViewNX" -2.8 fixes this problem. But those who used the old Nikonsw are in bad shape . Thanx for the info.
Please clarify: did this behavior exhibit itself with photo previously imported, or only new imports since installation of 4.08. If both cases, please explain how the newer version of NX2 corrects for photos previously imported?

I'm seeing this problem too, files from my D90 that were imported years ago to iPhoto now do not display properly. These would have been transferred via NX around 4 years ago and imported into iPhoto around 2 years ago. Have always been fine before in iPhoto, finder and aperture until today. The files open fine in nx2. So it just appears to be the apple software. Recently (July) imported d7000 raw files are fine
