Canon ZR400 will not download tape data to iMovie

Never used iMovie before so it is new to me. As well I just purchased my first camcorder; a Canon mini DVD with digital tape/memory card. The camcorder works flawlessly, Software installed without any problem. I am connected with a firewire cable and the camera is pluged into an external power source.
When hooked up to my iBook, the only software that recognizes the camera is iMovie. I can view the footage and control my camera while in iMovie in real time. iMovie version is 3.0.3. When in iMovie I can only import clips by clicking on IMPORT. The clips are between 2-5 seconds in length. Nothing longer. When the clip is replayed it hesitates in iMovie and sometimes freezes. I would like to import the whole 60 minute tape.
Could this be due to the fact that my ibook is only a G3, 700 mhz? I have read, and re-read all the manuals and I have everything hooked up correctly, as well as viewing DV IN on the camcorder screen when in iMovie.
Please advise.
Thank you.

Your Canon is a miniDV, that records on tape. A miniDVD is a different creature: It records on small DVD discs and are NOT compatible with iMovie.

Turn off FileVault:

If that didn't help, try everything here:
