Sep 3, 2013 7:53 AM in response to juliefromsdby King_Penguin,If it's a first gen iPad then iOS 5.1.1 is the highest version of iOS that it supports, you can't update it to iOS 6+
In terms of it not appearing in your computer's iTunes, is the version of iTunes that you are using relatively up-to-date ? There is some troubleshooting for a device not appearing in iTunes on this page which you could try : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

Sep 3, 2013 8:06 AM in response to juliefromsdby King_Penguin,The first gen doesn't have cameras on it (the subsequent models do). You can also type in the iPad's serial number (Settings > General > About > Serial Number, and it's also on the back of the iPad) in on this page and that should tell you the model : https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
There's also a model number on the back of the iPad which you can look up on this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5452
