You can force a reset of the device by continuing to hold that lock button down until you see the Apple logo. The following Knowledge Base article has more information on this process.

If the error that you are seeing is something along the lines of "iCloud backup failed: Not enough storage" than I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.
