My macbook isn't charging continuously. It goes between 'charging' to 'not charging' every few seconds. What could be the problem?

How heavily are you using the computer at these times? If you are taxing the system what you are seeing is fairly normal as when the system is under heavy load it will draw power from both the AC charger and battery at the same time. Which means the battery will stop charging and the battery icon will indicate that.
Try a SMC reset:

Have you checked the connections from the power adapter to the MBP? Note the pins in the power adapter are spring loaded. See if they are free. Are the connections discolored?
Have you checked the battery status? Open System Profiler or System Information and look at this display:

I am using several applications at once, but I have never had this problem before. I find that when I turn the laptop off to charge, it charges as normal bit makes a very faint high pitched noise. I have checked all connections and they seem fine. I will post a copy of my battery status. Thanks for the response this far. :)

Could the battery need replacement? Anyone know?
If the noise is coming from up by where the mag safe is connected, it could be the dc-in board.If down around the track pad could be battery. But as suggested check the connection at the computer end of the mag safe, both the mag safe and on the computer.
