Iphone 4s sync to computer ms outlook calendar problems

Can someone explain exactly how the calendar syncing "do not sync events older than ? days" works. Apparently, this is what is deleting my old calendar events. I've already wiped out my calendar twice trying to figure out what i'm doing wrong. I want to keep all my calendar events permanently, and syncing seems to delete prior dates.
