my address bar keeps disapearing and I have to go to file then "open location". I am not sure what I did but would like to know how to set it back so the address bar is always there

It sounds like the toolbar where you normally have the section to put in a website URL is not showing.
You should be able to tell Safari to show the toolbar from the View menu, then click Show Toolbar.

The option in the screenshot is showing Hide Toolbar becuase the toolbar is already showing. If it were hidden it would say Show Toolbar.
