Computer turns on but does not remain on after a few minutes with the charger connected

My laptop has been dead for a while on the charger the light will go off as if it is not chargering... and while on the charger or off while the computer seems to be setting up or loading the lock screen it has somesort of progess line and never the very end the mac book pro shuts its self off.. What should i do to resolve the problem
