I have one of the first airport expresses that apple released and I was wondering if there was a way to update it to make it work on mac osx 10.8.2 because i cant afford a new one.

You can use this AirPort without any problem. If it was already set up, select the Wi-Fi menu on the menu bar and press your AirPort Express.
If you want to set it up, AirPort Utility 6 drops support for non-802.11n AirPort Expresses and Extremes. The solution for this is to reinstall AirPort Utility 5.6 by following the steps of this website > http://frank.is/mountain-lion-and-the-old-airport-utility/

I have tried using that version of airport utility but it doesn't seem to work
Do you get any error? Can you connect to your AirPort?
once I have set it up it just wont restart and just flashes an amber light
It means that you need to do something to make your AirPort Express work. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4600
airport utility 5.6 is no longer able to find the airport express
can i only use the airport with an apple wifi (from an express, extreme or time capsule), all i want to do is use it to airplay and to do the wireless printer thing. if so that might be where i am going wrong. :/
The AirPort must be connected to a modem by an Ethernet cable. If not, it won't work
i thought you could connect it to the wifi network and do it like that for the wireless printer or airplay.
It has to be connected to your existing network by Ethernet, not wireless
but when i go though the setup it gives me the option to join my existing network?
by the way, sorry for being so stupid
That option only works for other AirPort Expresses, Extremes and Time Capsules
ok i will have to try and use it elsewhere then because i don't have access to the ethernet at the moment.
