TC RAID External HDD

Hi all,

I don't see my post about this so I will ask it again.

I am thinking of getting a Sans Digital RAID box that has USB 3 SATA 6 connections can I use this as an external HDD connected to the Apple TC?

Also does the new TC router have a USB 3 port?

The Sans Digital person could not answer this question.

Thanks,

John Gerard

We probably cannot give you an answer either.. but I did work through a raid with another person and it failed. Raid arrays offered on USB will very likely not conform correctly the specs required. Do not go there.

The TC is usb2. And even saying that might give you the wrong impression.. it is slow USB2. ie half speed at best of the same disk on the computer.

Use ethernet and use a real NAS.

Or use a proper server arrangement and put the array into a real USB3 port otherwise it is going to be slow.

Hi,

Thanks, one comment I am looking into the new Apple Router with 802.11-ac. And give my current TC to my Sister. An excuse to upgrade my network a little. I read that the new Router only has USB2. I am a little disappointed or steamed I am a little of both if this is true. When the Apple router does not get updated very often why would Apple not include USB3. They included Gb connections.

So do you or anyone else know of another NAS device that hooks to my network either wirelessly or hard wired. Without having to use a computer. I know of a few devices such as the Iusbport device that runs off of batteries. I am not sure how well this device would work if I just want to plug it in and leave it turned on all the time.

Synology or QNAP are the big brands in the NAS game.. I know synology make a wireless model.. and they are both capable of handling Time Machine. although Apple seem to throw a spanner in the works and it can be unreliable. But for storage of large volumes of files they are the best.

Many people now DIY NAS with an HP microserver.. you can use several different firmware varieties.. freebsd for instance is very good and also TM compatible.

You would never want to join it via wireless.. always use ethernet.

There is no reason to not use an Extreme though.. as the wireless router.
