And I got the same issue. Does anyone know if this is a common problem?

My computer: Macbook Air 2013 11¨ i7.

This is not a very common problem that I have seen. The issue itself has something to do with how the machine wakes itself back up. The problem is, it could be one of a few things, it could be failing onboard video, a software issue withing the OS, or anything in between... I know this is very vague but it is hard to say without laying hands on it and troubleshooting. Your best bet is one of two things... Either call apple via dominic23's above post or set your machine to not go to sleep for an extended time so the machine wont go into this state. If it is in warranty, I highly recommend contacting Apple.

I have a similar problem on a Macbook Air 11inch that is a late 2011 model (first model with thunderbolt). It unfortunately is out of warranty but started doing this about a year ago. This first picture was taken Aug 22.

As you can see it's only happening when lifting the lid from sleep as we are on the lock screen waiting for a password. When the macbook air is doing this it's completely locked up and only a cold reboot gets it working again.

The second picture was taken Oct.20.

I know what triggers this problem, atleast it did for me. When I connected my MBA 13" 2013 to an external screen such as a TV using the hdmi adapter, and plugged it out after a while. Then these horizontal lines showed up when I waked the MBA from sleep.

Restart your computer and try this. Restarting the computer makes the horizontal lines go away.

1. Connect your macbook to a external screen with the hdmi adapter.

2. Go into Apple -> Preferenes -> Screen

3. Try to change the resolution on the screen

4. Now rotate the screen and see what happens.

When I rotated the screen the horizontal lines was showing on the TV aswell.

I dont what cause this problem though.

Thanks for your input. I will try your suggestion. True restarting makes the lines go away, until the next time it happens. I have to cold restart it though (hold the power button down until it powers off)

I have recently updated this MBA To Mavericks and haven't seen the issue since. I wonder if they changed something in the driver to where this is no longer happening. We shall see. If I can go 6 months without seeing the problem I'd be comfortable with saying they fixed the problem through software. Otherwise, I'm suspicious that it's a hardware or firmware issue due to the nature of the lockup that comes with the display anomaly.

Brand new Macbook Air 2013, after disconecting HDMI adapter screen goes gray, line's paterns may vary, I'm working with external display, since there is no way to fix it. I restarted sevelar times, even from diferent disk, changed display preferences. Mavericks updated 10.9.1.

SMC reset

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.

Since you just bought it, contact Apple about making an exchange within 14 days or repair after 2 week period.

Not solved but thank you anyway, I'll go for an exchange.

PlontinusVeritas's suggestion to reset SMC seemed have solved my problem.

I have Macbook Air mid-2011 with Lion 10-7-5 OS-X.

I started having screen issue when I statred using an external display.

It seems happening randomly, but after reading this forum, I figure it was happening after the use of external display and/or when I put it into sleep mode. When issue comes up, I was able to temporarily solve the problem by adjusting the opening angle of the lid. So, I thought that it might be caused by an unsatble connection of the screen to the mainbody. The problem got worse and worse, I have been keep using the external drive.

So, I tried to figure out a solution and did google search to find this forum. I tried SMC reset and tried to put my Mac air to sleep, to turn off and start, and to restart.. and I haven't get the problem back yet.

I left my external monitor at work so I will have to try using it again tomorrow and to see if SMC reset really solved the issue.

If the problem gets back and then I can solve it by resetting SMC, I will be still very happy and thankful to PlontinusVeritas!
