My daughters mac immediately goes back to her homescreen when she tries to open her downloade documents from text edit. Can you help me with a solution?

When my daughter opens her downlaoded documents from her textedit, her mac suddenly returns to her homescreen. Any ideas or solutions?

This sounds like a permissions issue. First you must identify the operating system, by going ot Apple menu -> About This Mac, and then someone can direct you to the correct part of the forum to find an answer.
