setting up printer- can print from admin account, can't print from others

i'm setting up an hp laserjet m1132 mfp in a school lab in africa. i can print from the admin account but not from other accounts ( a standard and a managed account) on the same machine.

problem replicated on a imac g5 and a macbook core 2 duo (both running os 10.4.11) with a direct usb connection.

they can scan but not print. i've tried checking the 'administer computers' option, 'supporting programs' option, but still no success.

the standard account has no restrictions but still won't print.

the error message says ''word could not communicate with the printer. there are several possible reasons. •your printer or its driver may not be set up correctly or there may be a problem with the network connection. you may need to adjust your printer settings. •there may be a bad connection between your computer and printer.'

since it prints from the admin account, i can rule out nework/cable problems/bad connection, printer settings.

i've tried reinstalling the driver from within the accounts instead of the admin account, still no success.

any ideas on what else to try?

Mac OS X (10.4.11), imac g5, macbook core 2 duo

It is directly connected to the mac via USB.

Originally printer sharing was off, i tried enabling on the off chance that it applied to sharing across accounts (I thought that printer sharing is for sharing with other machines on the network, not accounts on the same machine- but i gave it a try anyways. No difference either way though.)

Don't know if this is helpful, but the HP documentation suggested trying to ping 192.168.45.39 and look for results...

This is what happened in terminal trying this:

Welcome to Darwin!

PM-2012-30:~ student$ ping 192.168.45.39

PING 192.168.45.39 (192.168.45.39): 56 data bytes

ping: sendto: No route to host

ping: sendto: Host is down

ping: sendto: Host is down

ping: sendto: Host is down

ping: sendto: Host is down

ping: sendto: Host is down

ping: sendto: Host is down

...which just continued longer than I was willing to watch for
