I changed my apple ID but it still shows my old one on my phone. How do I change that?

I changed my apple id but on my iphone it still says my apple id is the old one. I changed my password too and when it asks me for my password it says it's incorrect. So now i can't retreive mail or download any apps.

iPhone 4, iOS 6.1.3

Hi brittany,

Go to Settings>iTunes & App Stores and sign off of the old account, then sign on with the new ID. Also, under Settings>iCloud, if the old ID is still signed on, then delete the iCloud account and sign back on with the new ID.

Remember, all apps purchased under the old ID will still be tied to that old ID, so when they need to be updated, it will ask you for the password to that old ID. It is easiest if you go into Manage Your Apple ID, and under that old ID, update your password to match the one you are using for your new ID.

Also, the iCloud account associated with your new ID will not have any of your photostream or other iCloud information from your old ID, unless you simply changed your old Apple ID, rather than if you created a new ID.

Cheers,

Yay! I called Apple and Brittany had me do a work around to tackle the above problem. When I tried to sign out of my old Apple ID in iCloud on my phone, it was prompting me for password for my old apple ID in order to turn off the Find My iPhone feature before proceeding. Well she had me purposely keep putting in a wrong password until it locked up and prompted me to reset the password using security questions. After I answered the security questions, it went to the next screen which asked for both Apple ID and password. At that point, I entered my new Apple ID and password to proceed. The Find My iPhone featured then switched off and I was able to sign out of the old Apple ID in iCloud. I then signed into iCloud with the new Apple ID and password and it went through a verifying process (had to be connected to wiFi). Then I was able to go tap on Back Up Now and everything is now backed up into the iCloud. Now I can activate my new iPhone and didn't lose any photos. Yay!! Thank goodness! Hope this helps someone else 🙂

OK, need a little more information:

1. You indicate that you have a new phone that you need to activate. Then you say you can't activate it until you back up photos to iCloud. Can you explain the connection between those two sentences? Do you mean you want to restore the new phone to a backup from an older phone, but that the backup for that older phone is too large?

2. When you state that you want to back up photos to iCloud, do you mean you are using iCloud Photo Library? Because if that is what you mean, then you don't back them up, they sync automatically. However, if you mean that you want to store photos on that other phone somewhere so you can delete them from that older phone, then you don't back them up to iCloud, you Import them to a computer: PHOTO IMPORT IOS TO MAC/PC. Photos that are on iCloud are in the iCloud Photo Library, and if you delete them from your device, they get deleted everywhere.

3. The third issue does not seem related to the other two at all. You are indicating that you have an older version of your Apple/iCloud ID still signed in to iCloud. If that is the case then you need to do one of two things to get that older ID signed off and the newer one signed in:

- If the Apple account for the old ID is the same Apple account that is being used for your newer ID (i.e., if you simply went to Apple - My Apple ID and changed the ID you were using to the new one, then all you have to do to sign the older version out is to go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom, and click on Sign Out. When it asks for your password, type in the current password you are using for that ID.

- If you set up a brand new Apple account for the new ID, then you will have to go to Apple - My Apple ID, sign in with the old ID, and change the password so that you can then sign that old ID out. If you don't remember the answers to your Security Questions, you will have to contact Apple Support to have them send you a reset link: ACCOUNT SECURITY SUPPORT. Be aware, that if you did, indeed, create a totally separate ID, then the iCloud information saved under your old ID will not transfer to your new ID, so it will become critical to import your photos. You would also want to select to Keep your Contacts on that phone when you sign out of the old, separate iCloud account so that you can merge them with your current one when you sign in.

Best of luck,

GB

You have a totally different problem. You have apps on your device that were purchased with that old ID. So, you have two options:

1. Contact Apple about the Locked old Apple ID and work with them to get it unlocked and get the password reset so you can supply it when it is asked for to update apps: ACCOUNT SECURITY SUPPORT

or

2. Delete all of the apps that you purchased with that old Apple ID, and re-purchase them with your new one.

Hi brittany,

If your old ID is not an @me.com, @mac.com, or @icloud.com address then you can simply sign into that old account under Manage Your Apple ID (link below), and then click on the "Edit" button next to your AppleID and change it to whatever your current email address is. However, if you are thinking of using the same email address that you set up your new ID with, then you won't be able to 😟 since that is now an official Apple ID.

So, here's what you would want to do if you decide to keep your new (2nd) Apple ID:

To make updating Apps easier (if you continue to use the new ID), go into Manange Your Apple ID for the old ID and update the password to be the same as whatever your new one is. Then when it asks for a password to do app updates, it won't matter which ID is displaying - you would just type in the one password.

For your photos, everything that is on your device now, except the Photo Steam, would still be on your device. To "transfer" the Photo Stream, I would suggest that you select all of the Photos in the Photo Stream that you want to keep (anything you want to keep that is not already on your Camera Roll), and then click on Share, and then Save to Camera Roll. That way, even though you will be starting a new Photo Stream with your new iCloud ID, the selected photos from your old iCloud ID Photo Stream will still be in your Camera Roll.

Hope this helps!

OK.

So, when you get your photos backed up, and then go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings, it will ask you for the passcode. Since the iCloud account is the same account that you had the old ID on, it should allow you to use your current password to sign out.

Another option may be to go to iCloud.com on your computer, click on the Find My iPhone app, click on your device, and then click on Erase. See if it will accept your current password to erase the device. If it does, then you are all set.

If it doesn't, then the old way that we did it may work, but from what I've seen, you have to verify any new address on the Apple - My Apple ID page, so not sure you would be able to do this, but here are the steps that we used to use to get this issue resolved:

1. Go to Apple - My Apple ID and sign in with your current Apple/iCloud ID

2. EDIT the ID back to the old Apple/iCloud ID, and see if you can save without verifying

3. If you were able to successfully change back to the old ID, go to Settings>iCloud and sign out using your current password

4. Go back to Apple - My Apple ID and sign in with the old ID, then EDIT it back to the current one - verify the email if needed

5. Go back to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your new ID

Best of luck,

I have the same problem, but I can live with my old email address showing up if I have to as long as I can sign in to iCloud. This is where I have a problem though.

I can sign in to iCloud in settings no probs, but I cannot sign in to buy more storage. I click which storage I want ( I'm signed in during this ), click the buy button, enter the password that's my current and working one, but it says it's wrong.......I'm almost out of storage and am ready to pull my hair out. LOL.

I tried the suggestions I've read before about going to Apple ID and changing my email to my old one, but it sends a verify email to that address and it no longer exists, so I can't verify anything. My ISP said I had to change my email address when I switched over to our National Broadband Network about 2 months ago, so my old email is dead and gone.

How can I buy more storage if I can't use my current password. It's the same on my iPhone as well.

any help is greatly appreciated.

Please ignore my post as I've fixed the problem.

Seems that if you sign out of iCloud, let it remove notes from iCloud, choose to not keep them on your devise, you can sign back in with your new email and password. In setting your new email will display under the iCloud button ( my old email was showing, even though it didn't exist anymore and it was preventing me from buying more storage because the passwords were not matching the email. ) But it's all sorted now.

Thank you Gail. In Summary, a while back we were given new email addresses at work, so I went to the Apple ID website from a PC and changed my email address to the new work email (did not know at the time that I should've signed out from that Apple ID on my phone first- so I've read). So for months I've been getting messages that I need to buy more iCloud storage because my phone is unable to back any photos up to the cloud. Photos are all I care about on this phone. However when I go to buy more storage, a message pops up prompting me to enter password (but it's the old email). Using the password for my current Apple ID does not work. Also when I go to Settings> iCloud on my phone, it shows my name and profile picture with the old email (Shows same profile pic when I sign into iCloud.com with my new corrected Apple ID email). I tried to Sign Out of iCloud on my phone, but then get another prompt for password for that old email in order to turn off Find My iPhone first. On the other hand, when I go to Settings> iTunes & App Stores, it shows my new Apple ID.

I've even tried to sign into iCloud.com using the old email address (even though I don't know the password) just to try to reset the password by answering security questions. But then I get a message that says no Apple ID exists for that email. I'm really in a bind. I think what I'll try to do tonight is another attempt to just put the phone photos on my old laptop. I tried last night but the laptop wasn't even recognizing that my phone was plugged in to it. When I open iTunes on that laptop, it shows the new email/Apple ID in the account settings. I will follow the directions you already provided for transferring photos to my laptop. As soon as I can save the photos, I can reset the phone to factory settings, delete everything from it and then activate my new iPhone using my current Apple ID/email.

It would just be really nice if Apple would have given me a warning when I went to iCloud.com to update my email/apple ID. There should be a disclaimer with directions on what to do first before trying to do that. Very frustrating. Thanks for taking the time to assist Gail 🙂
