.mmv files changed into unix exportable file. How to import in i-movie '11?

I recently wanted to open a bunch of video files I recorded ages ago with my (then state of the art) Sony IP minicam. The file-extensions of those files are .mmv

When I import from a dvd, I'm not able to open the files. They become a unix exportable file. (although the extension of the original files are still .mmv)

I searched some forums and i-movie '11 (latest version) should be able to open them. But no luck.

What now?
