Advice for slow Macbook

I recived a Macbook from my mother that she used for a few years. I have found a couple of issues while using the computer.

1. It is slow, not very slow but slow enough to bother me.

2. Importing videos and pictures takes hours, once it took days.

3. When editing video on Final Cut, it is extremely slow and lags like crazy.

4. I cannot open videos, quicktime player does not seem work.

5. general lagging

Will restetting it to a complete brand new computer do the trick?

I have already made a new user account then deleted her old one, so all of her stuff is gone.
