shared folders on 10.6.8 server not showing after update of OS X 10.8 clients

I was a bit surprised to find that the shared volumes on a Mac Mini Server running OS X Server 10.6.8 are not accessible except via smb. All of the clients are running Mac OS X 10.8.x.

The Finder show the apf server name in the Shared list of the sidebar but clicking on it reveals only the user account home directory. The other shared directories do not appear. To list them, I have to use Go To Server and an smb pathname. Worse, not all folders within the shares are shown or for a couple of folders their content does not appear.

I checked the server, ran propogate permissions from Server Admin on the server, but the situation did not improve. I searched the knowledge base and the web in general and have not found what I thought was relevent.

How to rectify this?

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), and basically all the mac and linux stuff I can handle.

Just wanted to bump. I've got files that can't be seen from a client cpu that exist on a MacServer 10.6.8 share. Just wanted to add that these files also don't show up on the client when searching from Spotlight as well. I've also ran the propagate on the permissions and still nothing. I'm experiencing this from multiple client computers now. Very disturbing!
