PhotoShop compatibility w/Mtn Lion - need input please =)

PhotoShop compatibilityQuestion for you lovely peeps: I'm upgrading to the newest MacBook Pro this week and wondered what the Earliest version of PhotoShop is compatible w/Mtn Lion? I'm no longer a gr.designer by trade, and don't need "all" the bells/whistles but Love PS and being an artist !! =) Just didn't think I needed to drop $700 on the latest greatest when I don't use it like I used to in that business. My current laptop is an older MacBook running an old OS obviously and it's time to upgrade all my favorite software. Thank you much!

Mac G4 desktop, Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I know that PS 4 will run in Mountain Lion, but if you're really running 10.3.9, you need to be aware that any OS newer than Snow Leopard no longer supports PPC applications because Rosetta (which supplied that support on Intel Macs) is no longer available, and some older versions of Photoshop are PPC only.

oh another tandum question... can someone explain please the whole "no disc in package" way of selling software now?? it's a code and you have to send for it? Also I am a student recently again for the next year anyway, and I'd love to purchase student versions but the reviews sound dreadful and that it's such a waiting game and pain in the - - - . Some say you just need email address to validate, others say send away for code, takes forever...

ugh please, Input?

Thanks again

The 'no disc included' - that is, digital downloads instead of physical media, are just a way of life now.

I subscribe to Adobe's Creative Cloud, for example, and there are no codes to enter - you just subscribe and download the software. Same with Office 365, a subscription service for Microsoft Office products.

You can get student discounts for Adobe's Creative Cloud, I know, but I think Office 365 is 'one size fits all' for home users.

Welcome to the digital age...

Thank you Clinton. I know I need to step up. When I was a designer I was the go-to girl for everyone's questions. now I feel like the rookies I used to chuckle at (in the nicest way of course)... over 15 years ago. =/

I guess I have resisted Cloud for several reasons: Married to a monthly fee which increases overhead. And "THEY" have even more access to our personal world than the larger digital community already does. It seems so abstract. And it's like leasing a car, you own nothing! =/

thank you sincerely.

resistantly stepping up (even though my preferable world is psychology now) =/ but using all my own coping skills to reign in patience here.

have a great day

Thanks for the input so far.

Csound1: do you own CS3, do you use the Cloud (which I am still resistant to and woud rather own PS)... or just knowledge of it?? My head is spinning and haven't had to deal with compatibility for some time. It's supposed to be fun to get a new laptop not stressful. =/

Thanks in advance for your input.

I own CS3 and have done for some time (years). Please note that if you use Droplets, they don't work.

By the cloud I assume you mean Adobe's CC, which I do not use.

If you prefer a boxed version with a perpetual license, you'd be best off springing for CS6 while Adobe is still selling it. The standard version isn't too bad at about $600. If you have no need of the 3D features, that's really all that's different from the extended version, which sells for around $800.

There's basically no savings looking for older versions. I saw an unopened copy of CS4 on Amazon that was actually more expensive that CS6. Trying to find an unopened, full version box of CS3 or newer at any price you'd call cheap is very difficult.

Avoid any open box. Especially upgrades. Unless the seller is willing to fill out a transfer of ownership form, the serial number will always be "owned" by that person. You may find it difficult to install (won't allow it), or upgrade from.
