Endlessly "verifying iPod"

When I connect my iPod to my MacBook, iTunes says it is verifyin the iPod, but it never does. No matter how long I leave it connected, it continues to verify. I have tried restarting the Mac. I attempted to restore the iPod but cannot because it won't verify. What might fix this problem? Thanks.
