I need to transfer from my Intel G5 to my iPhone ONLY those tunes that I imported from my CD collection. To the best of my knowledge the two devices have compatible software.

Sync them as you would anything else.
No such thing as an "Intel g5".
What version of OS X, iOS and iPhone do you have?

Then as long as you're running the newest iTunes, the answer roaming gave is it. What sort of difficulty are you having?
I have lived to old age without ever having synced one device to another. With the phone connected by a USB cord, I have not yet located the control on either device that shows me how to do this.

Be sure you are viewing your library by clicking Library in the top right. If it says iTunes Store, then you're already viewing your library.
