new trade-in program

I have heard about Apple's trade-in program towars the new models soon to be released, does anyone know that if I have the current phone now can I pay the difference and then get the new model like I would if I bought the phone 3rd party(other cell phone carrier, craigslist etc.) and they called my cell phone carrier and gave them my IMEI and then its all good or is it different with Apple?
