Personally I think Apple would know when they're going to release their own OS better than anyone else you may have heard that from. The only way to get a definite answer is to wait for Apple to announce the release date.

That just means that it will check to see if there is an update, it won't necessarily find one. iTunes does this routinely, I believe every week.

As it sounds like you already know, Internet sources for non-public information like launch dates are often incredibly unreliable.
