connection to outgoing server failed

I am having difficulty setting up my work email on my iphone 5

I can receive emails but cannot send. An error comes up and says, The connection to the outgoing server smtp@cts-1.com failed. Additional Outgoing mail servers can be configured in settings....

My company name is CTS, so my email is bquon@cts-1.com

Can you please guide me through the process?

Thank you.

I've been having the same issue for at least a year with two different iPhone 5s, and two different major UK providers. Sending emails nearly always fails when I'm not in a wifi zone - even when there is a good network signal and 3G. Both the providers confirmed my settings were correct, so as far as I can see, this IS to do with the iPhone.

I am paying a major UK provider for authenticated SMTP access, and they confirm it should certainly work when out and about with the iPhone (as did British Telecom before them - BT insisted it should work "anywhere in the country"). The settings are correct. But it hardly ever works. With BT, the usual message was "No response from the server mail.btinternet.com". With my current provider, it's "The connecton to the outgoing server . . . failed". Very occasionally it does work, which presumably confirms that the settings are correct (which I know anyway).
