I am upgrading my desktop to 10.6.3 by installing the DVD, but it is ejected from the drive. Help. What is going on? How do I install and upgrade to this version?

Snow Leopard can be installed on certain computers but not all.
Check if your computer meets the hardware general requirements shown at this link.
Does your Mac have an Intel processor and at least 1MB of RAM? Where did you get the disk - is it a retail box, or is it the grey install disk that came with another computer - if the latter, you will not be able to use it, as it is machine-specific.
