iphone 4S doesn't connect to wifi

I've had problems with my iphone connecting to my wifi. It's not the router - my ipad, other iphone, and macbook all connect fine. For a while, the wifi bar was greyed out. I've wiped the phone (after backing it up) and reloaded. Now, it just doesn't connect. But if I go into Settings>General>About I can see a Wi-Fi address listed.

Bluetooth works fine.

I've reset network settings, as well as all settings. Nothing working.

I've seen much talk about hardware fixes (freezing it, heating it, etc.) which seems bizarre to have to do a hardware fix for a software problem

never happened before I upgraded to 6.1.3

now - I can't access my iCloud music via cellular data - I've enabled it, but it just doesn't go through. won't even show my iTunes Match music available.

ugh.

Try resetting the iphone by holding power button and home button down at the same time, and keep holding until the Apple logo appears.

If that doesn't work, try reseting your wifi router. That has worked for me before when I have wifi problems.

I've just read through Apple's support pages on wifi troubleshooting, and they all basically tell you to reset network settings, which you've already done.

Also try "forget this network" then enter in the wifi password again.

If that still doesn't work, in the iphone's wifi section select "other...." to manuall setup a connection:

Name: <SSID of your wifi router>

Security: <match your wifi's setup, such as WPA2>

Now see if it will join or not.

If that still fails, turn set your wifi router's security to "None" (just temporarily), set iphone to "forget network", then try to connect again.

If connects, then change router's security back to WPA2, and try to reconnect with iphone again. On Iphone, select "forget network" and it should ask you for password.

If all else fails, try using another router. My this point in time I think we'd have an older router lying unused somewhere around the house.

WMM (wifi multimedia) is enabled on your router, right?

My wifi settings:

Security : WPA2-PSK (aka WPA2 Personal)

Security algorithm: AES

the other settings I've just left them at defaults, which has worked on every router I've ever used.

Not alot of what you wrote applies. The wifi is greyed out. Meaning you can't turn it on/off. So it doesn't matter what router, or where, there is no wifi. I can't forget a network - there are no networks if the wifi is off, and unable to be turned on.

After completely wiping it clean and starting from factory settings, I was able to turn on the wifi, for a little bit, but found no networks. After an hour or two, it went grey again.

SO I see not point in messing with the router. It's working fine for all other internet devices in the house - iPad, Macbook, Windows, etc.

HOW DO I TELL APPLE THAT THEY NEED TO PATCH THIS SOFTWARE OR ADDRESS THIS IN NEXT WEEKS RELEASE OF IOS7?

Yes, my phone is out of warranty. I bought it unlocked from Apple over a year ago, and everything was fine till this software update. As my brother told me - don't update your software unless it's gonna do something you absolutely need. Vauge promises of improved performance don't fly for him. Wish I'd heard about all this before upgrading....

I'm sorry to hear this. No one should have to go through this: an update from Apple resulting in unuseable hardware.

Today I searched again and found this link written recently:

If we search for "iphone wifi gray" or "iphone wifi grey" we would get a long list of different methods people used. This is unbelievable, because one of the reason for getting an iphone in the first place is a phone that just works. Now look what people would have to go through!

If enough iphone4s who are still under warranty go to Apple to get this problem fixed, maybe, just maybe, Apple might offer a free fix for people out of warranty but got hit by their "upgrade".

After all, it isn't your fault that you upgraded. Appled wanted people to upgrade for the latest security plugs.

Some folks cleared the problem by simply putting phone in airplane mode, reset, then take out of airplane mode. One guy cleared it by removing "forgetting" a bluetooth device.

Please read this one: http://transfer-iphone-contacts.blogspot.com/2013/07/iphone-wifi-greyed-out.html

This article above gives you the steps for a fix that works for some people. In fact, it's the same method that the fix on apple's support site: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559

Here is another similar article: http://www.appledystopia.com/tech-tips/ios/fix-grayed-out-iphone-wifi/

I would hold off on the blow dryer method given below unless you have no other options left.

As weird as it sounds, people have been putting their iphone4s into the freezer, some have tried blowing hot air directly onto the chip: http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/135053/WiFi+Greyed+out+iOS+6.1.3

Summary:

Ways to "fix" wifi grayed out problem on iphone4s after upgrade to 6.1.3:

1.) Easy one - wait for ios7 is out, upgrade and see if the wifi being disabled can be cleared. This would only work if the wifi chip itself or the soldering isn't damaged, ie the chip is "stuck" in a disabled state. A major upgrade might clear it.

2.) Use the put-in-airplane-mode-reset-phone trick as described by Apple and some of the articles.

3.) Get a quote for a repair (not a $200 replacement - one can get a new iphone5s for that kind of money).

4.) If you have another back up smartphone that can carry the day, and this iphone4s is expendable, and you don't want to pay money for repair, you might want to try the more adventurous blow dry method.

(But I wonder, if the wifi chip got disabled by overheating, how's more heat going to fix it? Is this method going to actually "melt" the soder so it reconnects after it cools off? It's risky, one would do it at one's own risk)
