Duplicate project needs to render again?

I duplicated a project in order to make a new version with a few minor changes. When I did so, all the renders had the orange line on the timeline, so it started rendering everything. In fact it seems to be taking forever to render. It's been a few hours already. The project is about 20 minutes. Why does everything need to render again for a duplicate and why is it also taking so long to do so? I duplicated "project only" as I didn't want to duplicate material, but just the edit. Am I supposed to have done something else?

There's an option to include render files when you duplicate the project. Unless you really have to, don't bother rendering.

Tiny tick box down below. Just didn't notice it. Thanks! So if I want to duplicate a project in order to make a few edit changes, but not duplicate any media, render files, or anything, just the edit, then I would do "project only" and tick the render files box, is that right?

I just duplicate project only and only render the few sections that really need to be rendered. Tttles and color correction I never bother rendering.

But if you want to output that version, then you need to render everything, right? So if I want to do that by ticking that selection box, then am I making double render files for the new version? That is, the new version can't just use the existing render files to save all that?

That's right, the render files are duplicated. You do not need to render before you export.

Got it, but if it makes a whole new set of render files, then every time you want to save a different version, you get a whole bunch more media. Was that the case in the old FCP where you could actually "Save As"? Just curious at this point. Thanks for your help.

If you did a Save As to duplicate the project, then you had to make new render files. If you duplicated a sequence it usually didn't need to make new render files.
