Lost some contacts but not all with calendar sync

I syncronized my work calendar to my iPhone 5. After that, I noticed I had lost a lot of my contacts. Would the sync have done this??? A friend sent me a text to test this - none of our past texts showed up under her number, just the new one. Are those contacts gone? Havne't been able to sync my phone to iTunes on computer for a while so the numbers won't be there.
