I need to unlock iphone 4s from sprint to use a different carrier, its no longer under contract. I called sprint and they gave me a code and said that the new carrier could use it to set up their network and that that was all that is needed to change carrier....
The new carrier says sprint still has to unlock it and the code is useless....
can anyone help?

I just called back Sprint... to my surprise, now they told me I had to go in person to the store and have the phone unlocked by Sprint Tech. BTW, the rep said it could and CAN be unlocked, but to expect errors and some features not working properly on a different carrier (SAME AS SPRINTs Service... lol)
I will take it in Monday, to see what BS they come up with...

(I canceled Sprints contract becuase everytime I had an issue the Sprint store employees were never helpfull, all they are trained to say is, " you need to call the 1-800 number for customer service" then afetr you call the phone rep asks you to visit the local store, and vise versa....... very poor service, they never have a solution!!!!! )... venting... 🙂

iPhones are not unlocked with a code. Sprint must send a request to Apple to unlock the phone; you must then Restore the phone using iTunes on your computer to complete the unlock.
So.. how long does that process take? Is it instant? I just got my iphone 4s unlocked yesterday from Sprint and tried this morning to restore the phone but it didnt work... It actually put a newer version of the sprint carrier on it.
Are you trying to unlock the CDMA or the SIM slot?
Last I checked Sprint phones don't work in the USA on At&t/T-mobile.
CDMA can't be unlocked...
GSM/SIM slot can be unlocked...
You do not have to attempt to unlock the CDMA portion of the phone.
Some MVNO's can take Sprint phones (see below)
Im just trying to get all the way through this to see if it really works. Its "Supposed" to work.
I have a "non trademarked" sprint iPhone 4s. (meaning no sprint marks on it)
I just got the MSL code direct from sprint yesterday and reset my iphone today via iTunes.
The only thing that happened is that the version of the Sprint carrier leveled up from Sprint 15 to Sprint 16.
Why is it such a hassel to get this thing unlockd so I can use on other carriers?
Does Apple or Sprint really care this point about such an old device? Sprint doesnt because they forked over the code pretty quickly.
Any Apple Employees monitoring this thread...? Please insert some common sense here and kindly help your customers figure this out. It shouldnt be this difficult and is starting to make me wonder why I havent gone back to
Samsung and be done with this crap. Im sure Im not the only iPhone user that is thinking this either. 😟

I was reading that the iPhone 4s and 5 have both CDMA and GSM capabilities. Is that true? If so.. why all the big deal about unlocking anything...? Or the big deal with the FCC...?
Apple does not participate here at all.
FYI: Sprint will only unlock iPhones for use on non US carriers. That phone can never be used on any US carrier other than Sprint.
It is far from instant. Allow 2-7 days after you get the confirmation email from Sprint, then Restore your phone using iTunes. If you are not on the current version of iOS when you attempt to Restore you will first be updated. You then must Restore again to unlock the phone.

This is what *****... rumors, other peoples statements and non-technical people making assumptions that they cant back up with actual documentation.
They never asked me for an email but did verify the serial number, IMEI and MEID. Have you done this before?

The Terms of Use you agreed to when you joined here make it very clear that this is a user-to-user technical support forum. There are hosts here who monitor for decorum and there are some employees here that answer questions if they remain unanswered for more than 24 hours. There are not engineers and technicians here.
It is not rumor, Sprint only unlocks the GSM side of their iPhones for use on non-domestic carriers. Go by their store if you want and ask and you will be informed of this. Or do a search of this site and you will see many posts from people who did unlock the GSM side and then could not use it in the states with GSM carriers.
For written documentation of what Sprint does you need to go to their website. Their unlock policy is not printed anywhere on Apple's website as it has nothing to do with Apple.

Sprint does not want to make it easy for their customers to leave, so they never unlock it for other US carriers, Thier unlock is to allow travelers to use other SIMs when out of the country.

The sad part (that Im apparently stuck on) is the "time to roll out" the new policy. Sprint's site already has noted this, hence the MSL code I received. How quickly other carriers will move on this remains to be seen. I guess I had my hopes too high for it to be an immediate change for users with older qualifying phones.
