quicktime player 7 needs codec

I was trying to playback (and convert) an AVI file I downloaded from a website into an M4V, but Quicktime player 7 said that i was missing the codec necessary to view the AVI file at all. when I played it back in VLC, I discovered that the 2 AVI files in question were compressed using packed yuv (yuv2). is there a codec that works with Quicktime player 7? if not, how can I get these AVI files converted? the reason i need these converted is because these videos are taking up 1.18 GB and each video is less than 5 minutes, so I want to compress these down to a smaller size. thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Try installing Perian. If you haven't bought QuickTime Pro, use MPEG Streamclip to convert the file after installing Perian.

Perian is a good codec for QuickTime to play AVI files, but, as AVI is a containder format, the Perian may not be able to play all AVI files, if it cannot help you play AVI videos, you can refer Video Converter Mac to help you.

perian is installed in my mac, but quicktime still popped up with that 'missing codec' issue. I have Quicktime Pro, and usually never have a problem opening videos, but this was the first time the issue occurred.

I may have missed something, but I don't believe that QuickTime can handle YUV2 in an AVI wrapper even with Perian. You might give VLC Media Player a try:

I read that it can handle YUV2 in a AVI container, but I haven't been able to confirm.

yeah, it appears that VLC is the only program able to handle this type of file. sadly, I wanted to get these 2 AVI files slimmed down because they are taking up a huge amount of space for such short files!

VLC Media Player can transcode your video to a number of other formats.

i've tried that in the past, but it doesn't convert files at all. only RealPlayer Converter and Quicktime Player 7 Pro do that (Real Player is garbage, but free)

Funny, VLC seemed to convert the file I just tested. But whatever works for you. There are lots of other video conversion utillities out there you can look into.
