So, after following everybody's advice, I got my old 2009 iMac working almost like new. But it was bothering me that I had those "shadows" on my screen caused by internal dust build-up. So I stupidly tried cleaning it out, following somebody's video on YouTube. All was going well, until I broke a bunch of pins off when reconnecting an internal cable...
I shudder to think how much the fix would have cost, and I needed a working computer quickly. So I ran up to the store and bought a new one, and refreshed it from my last backup from the old computer.
