Q: I've used airplay to watch video from both my iPhone 4S and my iPad 2 through my Apple TV. I"ve  also been able to play music on my Bose Airplay speaker from both devices. Now the airplay icon doesn't show on my devices. All are on the same network. HELP!

I've used airplay to watch video from both my iPhone 4S and my iPad 2 through my Apple TV. I"ve  also been able to play music on my Bose Airplay speaker from both devices. Now the airplay icon doesn't show on my devices. All are on the same network. I see that this could be a firewall problem, but I haven't done anything with firewalls, so I'm not sure how to check that. I also wonder if an electrical storm might have caused the problem. If the Apple TV component was damaged by a surge, how can I check it? I can still use the Apple TV, it's just the airplay that doesn't work.

Thanks.

Yes I have restarted all but the Apple TV.  I'll try that when I get home but it doesn't address the Bose Airplay speaker issue???

I can stir the pot a little more by mentioning that I have an analogue TV in another room, not connected to the Apple TV, and in the same approximate time period it doesn't play sound on certain shows and commercials. And on some commercials, I can hear the background music but not the verbiage. That's what is making me wonder about a lightening strike or power surge.

Technology! Love it when it works...

I should also mention that we have an Apple TV at work and I tried my iPhone and it worked this morning, so it doesn't appear to be the devices that are the problem.

    Thanks...

I did try unplugging the Apple TV and plugging in again.  No luck.  Does anyone know if I take it to an Apple store could they test it?

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

    1. Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
    2. Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
    3. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
    4. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    5. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    6. Restart your mobile device.

Thanks, Winston...I have done all of these steps and it still doesn't address the issue of the Bose Airplay speaker.

If it's addressed AirPlay issues on your Apple TV and other devices, it may well be that your speaker system has been damaged in some way.

Winston, I should have been more clear. I tried all the recommended steps and it didn't fix the Apple TV/AirPlay issue.  The Bose AirPlay speaker is a separate issue...my point was that it seems odd that both the TV and the speaker, which worked before have suddenly stopped. The difference with the Apple TV is that the streaming still works fine...it is the AirPlay feature that has stopped..

If you followed all the steps mentioned properly, then I'd try it in a different location to eliminate your network as the problem.

Actually, I did just bring it to the office and it worked. I'll try the same with the Bose speaker. The network does seem to be working, though...but I'll try restarting that as well. I did unplug the modem last week but I'll try again. Thank you!
