bluetooth keyboard is paired but does not connect

Both the keyboard and the keypad do not connect at startup. The wireless mouse does connect. Was told the antenna needed to be replaced but the computer recognizes another computer in a room 40 feet away. Genius at Apple Store wanted to give me a new keyboard. Tried it and still no connection. I have a 27" late 2012 iMac. purchased in April 2013.
