How do you go back up one level when using an App?
The Home button simply takes you out of an App. Often I simply only want to go back one level, but don't know how to?

That depends entirely on the App and how its programmed, most of the time they offer a back button if they want to alow going back to a previous screen. If there is no back button, then you can't actually go back.
"back one level"? Can you give us a context? What app?
For instance if using iTunes and after doing a search and selecting a product, etc, etc, if I simply want to go back a page (to rephrase the description) the pressing the Home button takes me back to the main screen. If there is no bendy arrow or return button, is there a way of returning to the preceding screen I've just come from?
It can be awkward having to restart an App just to return to a screen where I wanted to be be simply going back one screen or level.
For iTunes usually when you select an item from the search results you get a "Search" arrow button at the top left corner of the screen to go back to the search results.
Basically its unlikely that there is no way back.
