Q: Why does my G4 Audio Digital slows on Verizon 4G

I am trying out the Verizon 4G LTE wireless router/ modem broad band.  i successfully configured an older Gateway PC with Wndows XP to the verizon wireless with a USB wireless Realtech insert 802.IIn into the USB.  Both my PC and G4 has been connected by the wire connection from the CLEAR brand WiMax with reduced signal strength due to my area.  However the G4 has real fast speeds on the CLEAR connection.  After downloading the Airport utility for 10.4.11 Tiger for the G4, and successfully having the G4 connect through the Verizon 4G LTE with 3 bars out of 5 signal strength, with the Realtech USB pick up for the wireless Verizon 4G, the G4 machine slows to dial up speeds. Keep in mind the USB insert for the wireless on the Mac was connected by a USB multi port extention with the key board and pointer ( mouse )  However the PC increased in speeds.  What might be slowing down the Verizon 4G on the Power Mac G4 Audio Digital, or why is the Audio Digital slowing down on the Verizon 4G LTE wireless? Why would it be faster when it is connected by cable from the CLEAR ?

Oh yes, time of day & load matters greatly, but signal strength even more... I think there may be a Tam in the Wifi app that shows that & more?

The DNS numbers you provided.  How are they entered into the optional box?   Two have been provided.  are they entered as    5678.87654.876, ( with a coma ) between the two?  or are the spaced, or should I only enter one of them?

Right now the PC and the G4 Audio Digital are working with the verizon 4G LTE, I had switched the USB 802.IIN Realtech with each other.  The PC Gateway brand shows a balloon that the signal strength is excellent. The signal strenth on the G4  of the wireless utility window is at 100 % but has an occasional fluctuation  The time is 8:30 AM EST.  Sunny with temps going into the 90'0s.  This morning at 6:00AM  the G4 would not hold a connection so i switched the USB. ( i do not know how that mattered )

The tab on the G4 Network window of the selection bar 1/4 way down the window is  TCP/IP

nothing entered on the PPPoE tab,  the apple talk tab has no check mark to make apple talk active, the Proxies tab  configure proxies is Mannually and at the bottom of this window the Use Passive FTP Mode is checked.

Thanks BD, ..I believe persistence, in being patient with under standing the pathways of the computer, understanding position of the wireless pick up made a difference in having the G4 and the Gatway PC both use the Verizon 4G LTE work. Then I came up with another option, keeping the LTE Jetpack cool.

Right now the signal strength read outs of the two computers are different.  The PC reads 98 too 100 % and the G4 signal strength on the Wireless Utilityshows a fluctuation of the bar 75, 92, 83, drops down some and goes up back and forth.  Both computers have the same software.  No DNS servers have been added yet.   Just out of curiosity, how did you find or pick those DNS numbers?

Well, I've been using those numbers for a long time, before most ISP's DNS numbers were patched for redirection attacks, but there are many to choose from...

What DNS servers are used with Earthlink/Mindspring ?...

Users who have DSL provisioned by Covad should use these:

    207.69.188.186

    207.69.188.185

    207.69.188.187

The DNS servers for Earthlink (there are many others, I believe... someone else add as needed...) are:

    207.217.126.81

    207.217.120.83

    207.217.77.82

NOTE: To manually Opt Out of the redirecting DNS that Earthlink has shoved down our throats forced upon us then use the IPs here:

»EarthLink DSL FAQ »What are the DNS Opt Out Servers for the Redirecting Earthlink DNS Problem?

    207.69.188.172 (East Coast)

    207.69.188.171 (West Coast)

If you are on the East Coast use it as your Primary DNS entry and use the West Coast as your Secondary DNS entry. If you are on the West Coast use it as your Primary DNS entry and use East Coast as your Secondary DNS entry. It is best to hard code these into your Router only and let the Router give the DNS to your PCs via normal DHCP instead of manually having to hard code multiple PCs. Most Routers have a settings location to place DNS entries.

For speed tests, I am now recommending speedof.me

The speed will vary depending how close you are to the  wifi router & number of walls between you and the wifi router.

Here is a web site that will rate your connection.  It will work on your ios device and your Mac.  It uses HTML5.
    speedof.me

other methods for folks who like to explore.

You can try downloading directly from the terminal to see how fast one file downloads.

    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal

    mac $ mkdir test
    mac $ cd test

    mac $ curl "http://www.apple.com" >see
% Total    % Received % Xferd  Average Speed   Time    Time     Time  Current
Dload  Upload   Total   Spent    Left  Speed
    100 11292  100 11292    0     0  22628      0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 62623
    mac $ cat see
    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en-us" lang="en-US">

There would be allot to learn and to examine with your reply and I thank you.

Use speedof.me  it's easier.  You will need a modern web browser.

    Picture 1.png

click on Start Test. I wouldn't worry much about other apps. Just make sure other apps are not making heavy use of the internet, like mail, downloads, etc.

You will see something like. I'm on a 750kbs dsl line.
