Configuration problems with IMAP e-mail on iOS with a non-standard SSL port.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

Thanks for this. It's been a problem for me. I've set up my account countless times trying to fix this. Always enetering my password in the "Add Account" box. However you actually have to manually remove the password from the Outgoing Server box and re-enter it to get emails to send.

Thanks Demo! ...Works great now! Apple needs to fix this. Your are right, it said putting in password was "optional", but it is NOT. Now I just have to figure out how to do text message with non Apple users. Thanks a million
