iPhone 5 water damage

On Sunday morning I dropped my phone in the toilet (unfotunately not full of fresh toilet water). I immediately removed the phone, wiped it down as best I could and tried to turn it off. Unfortunately, the touch screen refused to allow a full swipe for off and after a few tries stopped responding altogether. I couldn't turn off my phone immediately as the touch feature failed and holding the lock and home buttons only resulted in a reset. So I threw the phone in a bag of quinoa (I had no rice or other dessicant and I would recommend avoiding quinoa at all costs. That stuff made a huge mess) and started Googling. Looked like it was likely that my charging port has debris shorting it out and resulting in a restart every time the phone was powered off. I cleaned it with some isopranol and was finally able to turn the thing off. Then I went and got some rice and it has been in the rice since. This morning the phone turned on because I had an alarm set and it was on when I returned home this evening as well. I turned it back off each time and threw it back in the rice (which is sitting near my stove). I used these opporturnities to check the screen responsiveness and have been disappointed. I realize it may take about a week to completely dry, but I'm wondering if people believe there is any hope for the thing at this point. Is the screen fried? I don't have anything to open the phone and clean it with so I'm stuck with just the sim card port open. The indicator in the sim card port is still white but I'm guessing at least one of the other two indicators are red. Should I try to wait it out or take it to an Apple store for and out of warranty repair ($149)?

When an iPhone comes in contact with liquid you should try to power it off straight away and not turn it on at all then put in something like raw rice to dry out for atleast 72 hours. This is not a guaranteed fix but is something you can try but in the end like yourself if the iPhone clearly shows faults due to liquid damage which is normal then yes it would be best to get an out of warranty replacement at an Apple Store for a fee.

Not patronizing at all just stating what most have found to be the best way to deal with liquid damage and if it wasn't done then oh well nothing you can do but keep it as a helpful reminder in future. You asked if the screen is fried, not a good questions because nobody would know unless physically looking at the device. At the end of the day the iPhone is faulty due to liquid damage which most likely has caused many issues with the hardware of the iPhone. Opening the iPhone itself would be classed as unauthorised repairs and you would be denied service from apple for an OOW replacement because of this. So to cut out all the unnecessary details I thought I would just shorten it and say yes that an OOW replacement is in my opinion the best thing you could do. I never patronize anybody in these forums and I'm sorry if you felt that way but you are reading too much into a post that was just some friendly advice.

What can we do if iPhone is dropped into water by accident? Will all the previous photos, contacts and messages gone forever? No, they are just temporarily missing. Don't worry, there is a third-party program can help you rescue your water damaged iPhone and restore your files. But you would better have a good habit of backing up data in case things like dead iPhone happen.
