Software OS X 10.8.4 (12E55) for the 4th or 5th time has made an alarming sound, then freezes up?

What has caused this? Why?

I have heard of all sorts of building fire alarm sounds including horns, bells, sirens, and buzzers. None of them should come from your Mac, but I understand some hard disk drive manufacturers include an audio transducer to indicate a S.M.A.R.T status alert. Perhaps it is that. Running Disk Utility or Apple Hardware Test should confirm that suspicion.
