I have been told that it is possible to send a text message to another I-phone anywhere in the world and not be charged by my carrier - ATT. I checked with ATT and they said this is not the case. Is there a special app or situation, under which I can text to another I-Phone free of carrier charge?

I have noticed the phrase "imessage" show up to the left of where I enter a text, but I have no clue how it got there and when it works. Some texts that I send do not say "imessage". How does my I-Phone know if the recipient is I=Phone or another device? I am obviously new to texting. Sorry about my low level of understanding.
Imessage is texting between to Apple devices.
SMS is texting to a non Apple devices.
When you input a contact, the iphone will automatically know if the number is an iphone or not.
When you start your text and if you see blue its for imessage green is for SMS texting.
