Q: I upgraded to mountain lion and now my screensaver doesn't work right

I am having problems with my screensaver since I upgraded to mountain lion.  It only stays on the screen for a few mintues and then the screen goes black.

When I try a click my mouse and try to coneect to the internet my entire screen goes white.  How can I fix this?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

    By checking your screensaver settings in System Preferences.

     

    Is the screensaver one that you downloaded from the net or one of Apple's pre-installed ones?

    It is one I downloaded.  I even chatted with a Apple Tech about this and he walked me through what I was suppose to do.  Apple tells me what to do and it doesn't work?????

    Hi, try this...

     

    Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

    Third party screen savers from the net are not a good idea as they may contain malware.

     

    What did the Apple tech suggest you do that didn't work?

    He told me on a screen share that all I have to do is go into my iPhoto and make a folder named screensaver and put the picture I want to use as my screensaver in that folder.  Then go in system preferences and screensaver and use the photo from that file. I did that and it does stay on the screen for a little while and then my desktop goes black.  My cousin does it with his Apple Imac and he has all sorts of photos that he takes as his screensaver and it works perfect..

    Try rebuilding your iPhoto Library.

    My cousin does it with his Apple Imac and he has all sorts of photos that he takes as his screensaver and it works perfect..

    We need to clarify a few things.  Screensavers & desktop pictures are two different type of programs.

     

    Desktop pictures are usually static.  Live Desktop pictures are the exceptions.

     

    Screensavers are mini videos (moving objects).

     

    We need to know what you actually downloaded from the net... desktop picture or a screensaver?

     

     

     

     

     

     

    SIDEBAR:  There are not that many "custom screensavers" on the net **at this time** that work well with Mountain Lion.  I found about 5 so far.

    I have never had a screen saver that was a moving object.  They have always been a still photo.  My desktop is set to the picture I want and yes it is still.  I do not like moving object as a screensaver and I have never had one that has been a video type

    Yes you have!  All of Apple's pre-installed screensavers are "movers."  Check for yourself.

    The screensaver that is showing is a custom aquarium.

    Now that we know you actually mean desktop pictures (wallpaper), troubleshooting suggestions will be a tad different.

     

    Option key>Finder>Go>Library>Preferences - trash the com.apple.desktop.plist file, repair permissions, restart your comp & empty the trash when you reach the desktop.
