iMac as "permanent display" for Mac Mini

I have a thunderbolt equipped iMac and Mac Mini. I'm finding that I really only use my iMac now as a display for my Mac Mini. Is there any way to be able to enable my target display mode and keep it as an active display without having the OS running or the HDD spinning? Wishful thinking I'm sure. Any thoughts?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 3.4GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM

Yep - seen that 50 times. I know how to enable and use TDM...this was not helpful in any way. Thank you for the nondescript link though.
