I'm giving an iMac from one daughter to another and want to change the name of the home folder. The iMac is running 10.6. Is there a way to do this without reinstalling system software?

Open the Accounts pane of System Preferences, unlock it, control-click that account, change the name, restart, and move files from the old home folder to the new one as needed.

In your case, my suggestion is to erase and install everything again. For one thing that will remove all of your data off the Mac so that she will be able to start over fresh.
To not do it that way there will always be bits and pieces left on the Mac to cause problems for her.
