Why do my iTune purchases play in ITunes but will not download to my iPod?

I purchased new music from the iTunes store. It plays fine from my computer but will not download to my iPod when i sync. Also, some music that was in my iPod has disappeared from the iPod but is still in my music library. What gives and how do I get the music that will not download on a sync in to my iPod?
