Q: fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related

I've been having a lot of what seem to be kernel panics, usually while watching/forwarding flash videos (e.g. on youtube) and or toggling between full screen or not or using Adobe Bridge and toggling between full screen or not.

What happens is that the screen goes blank (if I hit the keyboard I hear dinging sounds) and the screen goes blank, and I have to force a power off/on.

This has happened as often as 10 times a day.

I took my computer into the apple store, they ran their extended diagnostics and found nothing.  The tech said it could be a logic board error, but because all the logs in the console were kernel panics he suspected it was the OS.

I reformatted the drive, reinstalled the OS and it ran fine for a day or so with minimal new software, including on youtube etc.

But today, I installed more software (Photoshop CC, a java based game, some extentions to firefox, and I experienced two panics today while viewing flash video.).

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd hate to shell out for a logic board replacement since I'm out of warrenty (just).

Thanks!!!

    macwebdiva-

Your kernel panics show a non-Trend.

In the absence of third-party kernel extensions, you have forced the kernel into impossible situations two different ways. That is often associated with RAM Memory problems.

You should plan on running Apple Hardware test all night. Type L to loop the test.

    Hi kaczor,

Same issue, my mid-2012 MBP exhibits all of the symptoms, took it to Genius bar and they said it's not covered. Did you have any luck? It's got to be the same problem....

I used the gfxCardStatus application and force it to run on the integrated graphics (Not the Intel HD4000 GPU) and it no longer crashes. How annoying...... clearly an issue with the GPU. Anyone know how to permanently disable the Intel HD4000 GPU?

Same here, mid 2012. Kernel Panic. Took it to a genius bar and they couldn't replicate the problem and therefore wouldn't replace the logic board. Happened again today and yesterday. Im not really sure what else to do now!

Same. Mid 2012. Unfortunately didn't pass the "MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues" test. Regardless, I was still getting GPU panics that were making my mac pretty much unusable. Just got it back the other day from Apple repair in Texas. All they did was wipe my HD. Nothing else. It is working better but I've already had 3 GPU panics just this morning; overheating, waking from sleep, and plugging in a thunderbolt display seem to be the triggers. Just a matter of time before this becomes unworkable again. Based off what other people have said here about multiple board replacements, there doesn't seem to be any surefire long term solution for this particular model. I'm at a loss.

Did you try to plug in external displays? Do they work? If they don't, won't it satisfy guys at Apple?

Forcing the mac to work in the "Integrated only" mode via gfxCardStatus helps a little. But yes, it seems to me that there is no long-term solution (sadly)

    Hi Everyone... I have answers.

I had the same issues (my config: Mid-2012 MBP 15" with Retina). Screen would randomly go black while using, and the only solution was a hard shut-down followed by startup.  The issue got progressively worse over the course of 6-9 months -- more frequent crashing and MBP would not start-up at, particularly when I had used anything graphics intensive prior (heat issue).  Upon restart, error logs would show 'GPU Panic.'

After trips to the Apple Store, where we reinstalled the OS and couldn't replicate the issue, I ran across a post (believe a user named Peter Loraine deserves the credit), which indicated this was a HW related issue resulting from faulty discrete AMD graphics cards.

Now for the good news... Apple has launched a repair program which extends through Feb 27, 2016 (see link below).

    http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

I took my MBP to an Apple Store, where advanced diagnostics were performed.  It confirmed that there was a video test failure.  MBP was then sent off for Apple depot service (at no cost to me - and I was out of warranty, but covered under this program).  As an FYI - estimated cost to repair showed $310 US, but again, was zero to me.  Three business days later, I had my computer back.  The Apple depot process is FANTASTIC.  In addition to replacing the Logic Board, I had a long-standing trackpad issue (my fault) that was also fixed (at no charge) by Apple and they replaced the heat-sink to ensure there would be no over-heating in the future.  Bottom line, I have practically new mid-2012 MBP, and couldn't be happier with the way that Apple handled it.  Not a single issue at this point, and my MBP is running better than it has in years.

My advice - make an appt at an apple store, go to the embedded link and take a print-out with you.

Understand that the process can be extremely frustrating, so hope this helps.

My suggestion... Copy and paste the panic report into a word doc or other and print it out. Take it with you to the Genius Bar.  There are two types of diagnostics that I've seen them run, one which is more exhaustive, easily showed the video test fail.

This is almost certainly a result of the GPU issue that is under warranty. (see my previous posts).

    Good luck.

The recall program requires that your Mac FAIL the Video Switching Test (VST). it takes 12 minutes to run unless it fails early. So you should be early and ask for the VST test as soon as anyone looks up at you, so they can get it started right away.

I ran one of mine that had all the symptoms and it took the full 12 minutes and PASSED, so no free replacement for me.

Hilarious- so shockingly my laptop that has had numerous GPU Panic/Crashes does not fail their VST test.

Despite me having numerous error log crash reports saved that show the GPU Panic they say its not the issue and can't fix it under this program. The icing on the cake for this though is that they are able to replicate the GPU crashing the computer when trying to come out of sleep mode during their tests. But since this program is just for issues with resolution and distortion have to charge me to replace the faulty board. Apple should be embarrassed. The issue they saw 1st hand is caused by failure of the same component they are replacing under this program but want 315$ to do it.

He said computer parts aren't meant to last 3years... but obviously they are or else they wouldn't be replacing peoples 2012 components. So annoying! APPLE YOU HAVE A QUALITY PROBLEM!

I had constant gpu panics up to a point where I couldn't even use my computer for more than 5 minutes. Then it would just boot to a black screen unless I allowed it time to cool off. Mind you, this was after two full disk wipes on clean OSX installs just in case software was the issue, which I thought at first since it happened while re-installing windows. I took it to the genius bar yesterday and it failed the VST test in a matter of seconds. So I'm very happy they're replacing the logic board for free.

To those who had their's replaced - does this include the gpu as well? It seems awful cheap ($200 in parts) for a gpu and board IMO. And if the issue lies within the gpu, since it runs ok on integrated graphics, why would they just replace the logic board?

How about NON-Retina Macbook Pro 15" mid-2012 that shares the same GPU with the Retina one and still IS NOT listed by Apple as eligible for enrolling in the free video card replacement problem?? Started having these kernel panics the last fall after 2 years of owning my machine, that I love anyways, in peace and quiet. True it was around that time when I started use some video and text editing apps quite intensively (talking about iMovie 9.0.9 and Pages 4.2) some time working for as long as 12 h with short pauses. The first KP was when I was exporting 6 h long iMovie project into a QT movie, then Pages began crashing my system on a more regular basis as well as Aperture: had 8 subsequent KPs during a week lately with the screen going black and unexpected restart, not speaking of crashing of these two pieces of software with either the regular crash or with the screen going black with cursor visible as well as brightness controllable (had to perform a hard restart). Had contacted Apple Customers Support on the subject whether my NON-Retina would qualify: NO, was their answer. Now isn't that ridiculous - why such discrimination of non-Retina even if potentially it could be more than 50% probability of having the same defect with the same brand and model of the graphic card?

All of my KP logs contains the same portion of code that may point out the same nvidia drivers:

Yes I was super annoyed- I went through the hassle to send in my laptop. It passed whatever test they run- but it did fail GPU PANIC at random other times like coming out of sleep mode (what I was having issue with the most) and they said that failure wasn't covered. Pay over 3k for a laptop to deal with these types of issues is ridiculous. The fact that it failed - but didn't fail the way they expected so it wasn't covered is absolutely absurd!

**edit** it failed while in their possession- they witnessed the issue
