Q: All of my friends who are using MBA mid-2012 have SSD failures.

The SSD failed after two weeks out of warranty.

 

In my case, the MBA mid-2012 was freezing immediately. After restarting, the screen turned white with blinking folder.

I have done all the solutions and they all didn't work. I went to the apple store right after that since I thought that the warranty would last until the end of August 2013 (I brought the product at the end of Aug 2012). The guy looked on the system and told me that It's expired since 1st of August which is not correct.

 

After asking my friends and local stores, I have found that a lot of people who brought MBA mid-2012 got the same issues. Most of failures happened after the warranty is expired. Although It's my fault that I didn't buy the apple care on time,I am still very disappointed. The apple products were more reliable than the others.

    Well, just received a call that my MBA has been repaired and is ready for pickup.

    They restored the operating system do I will have to restore from time machine or restore to new

    After a little more than 3 weeks, I got word today that my MBA is ready to pick up. The support people on the phone were very gracious and thoughtful - as they should be given the frustrating situation and disruption in my work. The problem is now one of rebuilding trust. Can I be confident that the MBA (new in January 2013 but a mid-2012 product) will be good for more than 9 months?

    Well, after dropping off my Macbook Air on Saturday night, I just received a call today that it is ready to be picked up already!  That's just a few days turnaround.  Completely surprised me.  Still disappointed that the SSD failed in the first place but am happy that I didn't have to wait 30 days to get it repaired.

    Posted earlier in chain, update in status. HD died Wednesday, made Saturday Genius Bar appointment. If I left charging long enough I could get into hd for 3-5 mins at a time, then could not use computer for few hours. On Saturday I awoke to find the computer powered on and lasted all day. After backing up all my files and postponing the genius appointment, I tried to replicate the failure. As of 5 days later the laptop appears to be working fine. However, I feel like a spouse that has been cheated on and do not trust the hd potentially failing again.

    Wish me luck.  I'm about to restore from my timemachine backup to my brand new SSD.  I am shocked they got it back to me so fast.  I dropped it of Sunday morning.

    My 4 month old MBA experienced an SSD failure last night. It's the 128GB model like everyone else. I'm a consultant working onsite with a customer this week, so this is especially inconvenient. I have a training class to attend next week, so I'm already making contingency plans in case it's not repaired during my Genius Bar appointment Saturday morning. This is the first Apple device failure I've experienced. Even my 3rd gen 20GB iPod from 2003 is still going strong.

    My Mid 2012 (purchased July) MacBook Air 128GB SSD just failed as well.

     

    As others mention this seems to be a wide spread issue now surfacing.

     

    Luckily I backed up most documents a few days ago but there are some important items lost because of this! And I have work to do!

     

    I'm going to be replacing with a OWC drive (hopefully will last longer!). But this needs investigation!!

     

    Too many people across many threads all mid 2012 128gb airs are having this issue!!

    I just came back from an Apple service center in Warsaw, where I left my computer on September 9. The very helpful repairperson was able to recover most, perhaps all, of my documents. They replaced the SSD with another Toshiba SSD, but he claims that is an improved, more stable component, and I shouldn't have to worry about early failure. (I do anyway). I think Apple has now figured out the problem, and, without admitting anything, is trying to replace the faulty SSDs as quickly as possible. The people at the repair service (Cortland PL) in Warsaw were very friendly and courteous, as was the Apple (Poland) representative on the phone yesterday, who gave me his email and phone number and followed up on every point. So there is movement on the part of the company. I do think they need to inform owners of MBA-mid 2012 computers that there may be a problem. They could take the initiative and replace them before they suddenly fail. My computer was only 9 months old when it died, leaving me in a very difficult situation while working and traveling in Europe (my home is in the USA). Other posts here indicate they are fixing the problem within a few days. I hope this continues! Good luck, everyone.

    Funny how these thread all started to pop up at the same time,  I think this needs to be taken to the media and blog sites! I predict we will see many more failures with people paying for replacements on a faulty product that should be repaired for free!

    I'm all restored from my Time Machine backup.  A couple of final notes:  1) I was reminded at the Apple Store by the guy who brought out my Macbook Air from the back of the store that if you purchased your Macbook with American Express, they add 1 year to manufacturer's warranties.  So I'm in the process of getting reimbursed the repair cost which is great!   And 2) It looks like they replaced my Toshiba hard drive with a Samsung!Screen Shot 2013-10-03 at 8.11.39 PM.png

    OMG.... seriously

     

    I got my dead SSD replaced in July, and NOW the replaced SSD (which is same Toshiba one) has started to corrupt my files...And when I ran the disk utility just now....

    I am so frustrated right now. I'm backing up as many files as possible but more and more starts to be corrupted so I don't know what to do....

    Update: Disk recovery failed. Not bootable at all after the recovery attempt. Totally frustrated.. It kinda acts like it has bad sectors. I'll run some test after re installing MacOS and will update what it indicates.

    So after my 128GB Toshiba SSD died on my MacBook Air 11 inch 2012, 1 year and 3 months in to it's life cycle,

    I had the part ordered at the Genius Bar, Covent Garden and the cost covered under Applecare extended warranty.

    I was told the part was constrained and I would have to wait an estimated 4 weeks.
    But to my surprise I got the call earlier this week the part was in, brought my MacBook Air to the store,

    and had it repaired within 3 days, when I was told expected turn around was currently at 7-10 days.

     

    Well done, Apple Covent Garden, you did well.

    Also, I'm happy I took out Applecare as having to argue your case for the cost of repair out of warranty isn't fun at all.
