Q: Photostream duplication

My iPhone has run out of space because for some reason Photostream is not only saving photos I have taken on my phone, but duplicating photos I have added to iPhoto and albums recently.  I have removed all photos from syncing up to the iPhone but still left with 1000 photos on Photostream.

Can anyone assist by explaining:

1.  Why and how is it that photos added to iPhoto are being added to Photostream automatically?

2.  How do I stop this from happening?

3.  How do I remove all this duplication without actually deleting any photos?

Thanks your assistance is much appreciated!

iPhone 4, iOS 6.1.4

You probably want to turn off photo stream completely.  Photo Stream will download photos from any Photo Stream that you have subscribed to.  This eats up extra space on your iPhone.  If you publish a Photo Stream, it might also be eating up extra space on your iPhone as well.

I want to turn off photo stream (running out of space on icloud), but with hundreds of photos in camera roll & photo stream, is there a way to find which photo stream photos need saving that aren't already in camera roll? I've seen the following advice which would be fine if there weren't hundreds of photos!

Save the photo stream photos to your camera roll if they aren't already there by tapping Edit, tap all the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll.  Camera roll photos are not deleted by turning off photo stream.

Thanks, I was suprised to learn this since I thought turning off photostream would make my free icloud capacity go further : Does My Photo Stream use my iCloud storage?

No. The photos you upload to My Photo Stream don't count against your iCloud storage.

Turning photostream off deletes photos in photostream. So my question was also: Is there a way to sort out the ones that are not already in Camera roll so I can save those photos before turning off photostream. Not knowing how to do that, I decided to just move everything to Shutterfly and it tells me if I'm uploading a duplicate.
