For no apparent reason the phone will suddenly magnify the icons or get so big that you can't even get to the slide switch to shut phone off. Most times just waiting a period of time (30 minutes plus) will help and it will suddenly go back to the normal screen. Sometimes it just stops working completely so you can't even make a phone call on it as the screen is unresponsive. Any ideas?

That definitely sounds frustrating. The symptoms you described sound very similar to an accessibility feature on the iPhone called Zoom. You may want to check out your Accessibility settings to make sure Zoom isn't toggled and/or setup as the Triple Click Home Button shortcut:

tap twice with THREE fingers on the screen.
If you don't want it at all, turn it off in Settings/General/Accessibility.
