return mac address without colons?

Question

return mac address without colons?

Anyone know some quick code under bash to return the primary Mac Address (en0, in this case) as a string without the colons?

Example: Mac Address of "00:11:d3:f5:g6:h6"

Returns as:
0011d3f5g6h6

/usr/bin/tr can do it.

Example:
echo 00:11:d3:f5:g6:h6 | tr -d ':'
will print
0011d3f5g6h6

Check 'man tr' for details.

the following perl one liner can do that:
mtsouk$ echo 00:11:d3:f5:g6:h6 | perl -ne 'if (s/://g) {print ;}'
0011d3f5g6h6
mtsouk$

ifconfig en0 | awk '/ether/ {print $2}' | sed 's/://g'

I'm sure there's a way to have awk remove the colons as it prints, but I can't think of it right now.

ifconfig en0 | awk '/ether/ {gsub(":",""); print $2}'

Hello,

Here's another variation of the awk approach. This one will ensure that each octet is padded with a zero if it happens to be less than 0x10 as seen in the ARP table:

echo 0:50:e4:c:b:5 | \
awk -F: '{printf "%02s%02s%02s%02s%02s%02s\n",$1,$2,$3,$4,$5,$6}'
0050e40c0b05
